Savory Ham Cheesecake

Savory Ham Cheesecake

Have you ever try Ham Cheesecake before? I'm first time eating cheesecake with Ham. I never know Ham can mix with cake. Frankly, I not enjoy it much because cake should be taste sweet even most cheese taste sour and salty but cheesecake always baked to taste sweety. This ham cheesecake a bit caught in me, it look nice from the outside but when I take a bite on it. It just surprised me.

It taste salty! arrgh...taste shocked. How can cheesecake taste salty?? not my type of cake. If it taste sweet, I believe I will enjoy a lot.

This savory ham cheesecake is baked for salty taste lover. Some people like salty taste food. In my own analysis, I noticed most women like salty food while men like sweet taste food. It like Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus. (".)

I wish to return the slices after a bite but I just finish it and try to proof that men and women are from same planet :-p ........impossible!

Starbucks vs Coffee Bean

Starbucks vs Coffee Bean

I'm not a big fan of coffee or I should say I'm not particular in coffee brand. I do drink coffee but not addicted. Not like some friend addicted to caffeine that must drink coffee every morning or else they can't concentrate, hand shaking, eyes watering, sneeze like drug addict. OK, I sound exaggeration. However, it is true :-p have you ever follow comic like Dilbert? There is a scenario in the office that everyone drop dead and boss appear and ask, what happen?

someone in the comic said: "the coffee machine breakdown"(-_-)

In this post, I want to rate the latte in Starbucks vs Coffee Bean. I ordered Vanilla latte in Coffee Bean in one occasion and I found it too sweet and the taste of vanilla is so artificial. Not really enjoy the drink and I recall in the past, whenever I drink at Coffee Bean, I not feeling well afterward. It like some sort of dizziness, do you have the same experience before? Maybe it just me who encounter it. I didn't find anything fancy in coffee bean at all.

Ironically, I won RM60 coffee bean voucher in one of the game.....fml (-_-)"

In the other competition of Coffee Bean, Starbucks offered much better latte. I like the green tea latte in Starbucks. The taste maybe weird for some people but I just like it :-D

Besides good latte at Starbucks, I noticed many good looking people buy coffee at Starbucks also. In one afternoon, not only good looking guys but many hot chicks will drink at here (Queensbay Mall branch) too. Drink coffee at Starbucks not only relaxing but can be very enjoying also (eyes washing.... :-p)

You rate at Poll beside, which one you like most?
Coffee Bean or Starbucks

Asian Cup Rice at Bukit Mertajam, Penang

Traditional Cup Rice at Bukit Mertajam, Penang

Date: 21 October 2012 (Sunday)
Time: 8.00pm Dinner

My second visit to this place after heavy workout in sea rowing. Why I choose cup rice? My first impression on this famous stall of Chicken Pork rice is the rice served in big portion. Instead of big portion, I should say the rice is well compress in the metal bowl. When the rice pour on plate and un-compress it, you'll notice the rice is a lot and start to wonder why you never finish the rice :-p

Since, I super hungry after workout, then it will be right meal for me and also full of protein since the rice is topped with shred pork and chicken. I been heard about other similar Chicken Pork rice in Cup at other stall in Bukit Mertajam but many can't come close to this one at Jalan Danby near to Chinese Temple (Tua Pek Gong Beow) at Bukit Mertajam. What make this one stand out from other?

It is the amount of shred chicken and pork that added on top of the cup rice.

They unselfishly give the ingredient and the cost is only RM3.50.

This cup rice is unique from normal roasted chicken pork rice because it served with the special thick gravy that make the rice better. If you're spicy lover, add green pickle chilies, the rice taste heavenly when the "dynamite" explode in your mouth. yum~yum~yum~, mouth watering?

Address: Cup Rice, Jalan Danby, Bukit Mertajam
GPS: N05 21.809' E100 27.633'
Business hour: 9am - 9pm

Please note that, the shredded pork and chicken selling fast, it may sold out before business hour end. Go early to avoid disappointment.

Japanese Steamboat at Krystal Point Penang

Sawara Japanese Restaurant at Krystal Point Penang (Second Branch)

Date: 24th September 2012
Time: 7pm Dinner

Heard about this Japanese Steamboat from friend long time ago but never dine in because it was located at Pulau Tikus (First Branch). It is quite far from the place I stay and don't feel the kick to try it although highly recommend by friend. Why I don't feel eating Japanese Steamboat?

My experience on Japanese steamboat at Yosenabe Shabu Shabu Steamboat restaurant not so great and I more prefer Japanese food like Sushi and Sashimi than other type of Japanese food. However, I remember how my friend recommend the food like the fish-Sawara imported fresh from Japan every Tuesday, how nice is the broth,  this and that, very tasty. It influenced me!

After sometime, Sawara open second branch in Penang where the location near to my place. So, I go to 'verify' it :-)

I forget how is the menu look like already. But you can order a basic set and add many side dishes or simply order advance set with most of the side dishes included. I ordered a basic set with Sawara fish head and some side dishes. Total bill is around RM60.

For those who not good at eating fish head, you can order fish meat only. However, that amateur. The best part of the fish is their eyes that full of nutritive. I also ordered 2 type of noodles which go very well with the soup after sometime.

I'm not fancy of Japanese steamboat but I will go back again and recommend this to other. :-)

Penang Food: Chicken Rice at Fettes Park

The one and only Fatty Loh Chicken Rice at Fettes Park, Tanjong Tokong Penang.
Date: 24th September 2012
Time: 1pm Lunch

Monday lunch, I travelled nearly half Penang Island planning to eat Western Food at James Foo restaurant but it closed on Monday. yakes...~! How now brown cows? Never mind, another good chicken rice next door.

Fatty Loh Chicken Rice and James Foo Western Food, these two restaurants used to co-exist in the same location before. That time, you can order chicken rice if you can't wait for the James Foo western food to serve. Last time, the service of western food was really bad and yet many people still dine there.

One of my experience is waiting 1 hour ++ to get the western food serve....wtf! That is the last one time I visit there until the new shop for James Foo opened side by side with Fatty Loh Chicken Rice, then the service only improved. Anyway, I talking about Fatty Loh Chicken Rice in this post.

I believe there is conflict in the fatty loh chicken rice business, the signboard of the fatty loh written as "one and only fatty loh chicken rice in Penang". But, you can see other chicken rice stall in Penang also claimed as Fatty Loh Chicken rice. Which one is the original? I think the one located at Fettes park look more real and original because there are 2 big statues of fatty chef and standing chicken outside the shop.

If someone tried to copy the fame of fatty loh, they won't spend so much money creating the statues. Another factor is fatty loh still selling RM1 Koay Teow (noodles) soup in Penang. You can't find any noodles soup at RM1 (USD0.30) nowadays.

Although they selling the Koay Teow soup at RM1 but the chicken rice is not cheap. I "kena" slaughter by them in this trip. I ordered steam chicken for two person portion, 2 normal rice, lok bak x 2, acha (vegetable) small portion, 2 koay teow soup and 2 drinks. it cost me nearly RM30, to be exact at RM28.50....fml. breakdown the cost, I also don't know how it come to that. On that particular dine in, fatty loh give sour vegetable soup for free. I feel like VIP treat until I make payment, then I find out they plan to slaughter me by give some "free soup" upfront....damn...!

I looked around, we're the only customer who dine there from the start order until I finish the chicken rice. Not even a single working class dine in or take away on Monday lunch. What could be the possible reason? I guess I know what is the reason and this probably the last time I dine at Fatty Loh Fettes Park.

Thai Food 123: Tomyam, Pork Knuckle and Crab Meat at Danok

Awesome Thai Food at Danok, border of south Thailand and Malaysia
Date: 22nd September 2012
Time: 12.00pm Lunch

Northern Malaysian favourite tourist spot is South Thailand, every weekend thousands of people if not million will travel to destination in South Thailand like Hatyai, Krabi and etc. There are also many travellers who go on short trip in Southern Thailand will prefer Danok as place to stop over. Here offer good massage, good entertainment, good food with fraction of price.

With many travellers each week, businesses boom and expanding at this area. Places like massage parlour, night club, pub, shopping area is coming up bigger and better. I'm not so adventurous, I can only tell you where to massage and where to find a good food.

(recently, friend also suggest go to Yes Club in Danok. it is happening club hidden in the "Soi")

Since this blog talking about food mainly. So, I quickly tell you where to massage then go over to the mouth watering Thai food by just mentioning on it :-p
For massage, go to "Oscar" at 3rd floor (if not mistaken). 2 hours massage at RM24. They also offer 2 hour massage at VIP room at RM50 if you would like some privacy.

Next, the food that I want to recommend at this Ah Ya Restaurant at Danok. It located at one of the "Soi" after Thai custom on the right side. Argh...can't explain in details or exact location of this restaurant. You just need to have good observation, you won't miss it as the signboard can be view from main road.

The specialities of this restaurant is the crab meat fried vegetables
What so special about this dish is the crab is served without the crab shell. I always find it hard to eat crab meat from the shell. Too much effort for too little return, some time the shell stuck in between teeth is so uncomfortable. Experience cut by the crab shell when tried to eat the meat also very frustrating. I also don't like the artificial crab meat. Till, I found this restaurant served the original crab meat without need to peel the crab shell. Good news for crab meat lover, isn't it?

Anyone going to Thailand without eating Tomyam is like never been to Thailand. The origin of Tomyam is from Thailand. So, I ordered the seafood tomyam and also crispy pork knuckle - another famous dish of Thailand. High dishes order rate in Thailand for Tomyam and pork knuckles.

1 big bowl of rice that can served 3-4 person, seafood tomyam soup, crab meat fried lor soon, pork knuckles and 2 bottles of sugar cane juices cost around RM60++, don't expect this price back in Malaysia.

If you ever travel to Thailand via Malaysia border, don't miss the food here at Danok.

KLIA Marrybrown Exotic Delight Curry Mee

The other day returned from Shanghai, a few hours transit in Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). We dine at Marrybrown restaurant at domestic terminal before flight back to Penang. This is my first time dine in Marrybrown and I never fancy it.

If you want to eat burger, you think of McDonald/Burger King. If you want to eat fried chicken, you think/go to KFC. You'll never remember anything about Marrybrown burger or fried chicken.

Spend 9 days in Shanghai, I want something spicy and I ordered the Exotic Delight Curry Mee with some fried chicken at about RM8-9 (I tried to check the price from marrybrown website and the curry mee is not listed in menu any more)

Nothing special, can't come near to any no-name curry mee in Penang. It just noodles with curry soup that taste spicy. I still can accept it because it is something different from Chinese food in China. I just "ketagihan" (addiction) to any local food. However, curry mee at Marrybrown will give a wrong impression to foreigner. The real curry mee is at Food Scan :-) check it out!

Beach Street Beef Koay Teow Th'ng

In search for the famous Gu Bak (Beef) Koay Teow Th'ng (Soup), I end up eating at Weld Quay Kopitiam (Coffee Shop). I thought that is the one and I was all wrong all this while until I found the original Gu Bak Koay Teow Th'ng accidentally. It located in one of the coffee shop at junction of Beach Street and Chulia Street, opposite fire station.

Yes, it is taste so good. I like the dry koay teow th'ng where you can mix with chilli, hot and spicy. The beef meatball is home made, I can't explain how tender and juicy is the meatball, you just gotta try it.

The price is not cheap though. Dry koay teow cost RM8.00 while soup one RM7.00 if not mistaken. I not encourage eat meat especially beef and hope the price also control a bit on people consume beef as their food.

Gurney Paragon Goku Raku Ramen

-->
Last week received a forwarded email from my colleague about 50% off @ Goku Raku Ramen offer. So, decided to taste the food before the coupon expired. This Goku Raku Ramen is subsidiary of Sushi King / Texchem. How I know this? my colleague who forward the coupon used to work at Texchem lah.

History of Goku Raku Ramen: In 1872, (wah, more than 100 years) noodles were introduced to Japan from mainland China. Ramen has since become prominent as one of the staple foods and favoured meals among the Japanese.

Over the century, the Ramen was developed into various styles. Different regions of Japan created their own specialties based on distinct soup types. In northern areas such as Sapporo, the Miso soup is a popular choice fro ramen, whereas in southern districts like Hakata and Tokyo, The Tonkotsu (pork-based) broth and soy-flavoured ramen dishes are preferred by the locals.

The Ramen Haven
At Goku Raku Ramen, we are introduced to the "Horikiri Style" ramen, discovered by noted Ramen connoisseur, Mr. Terushisa Shimizu. The unique style meshes well with the palatable pork, chicken and fish mixed broth, as well as the Shio (salt) and Shoyu (Japanese soy sauce) soup base made especially by the chef.

Today, we can fully appreciate the genuine taste of authentic Japanese Ramen now that Goku Raku Ramen has been established in the heart of Kuala Lumpur and Penang.
Yuzu Honey at RM6.90 and Honey Lemon Tea at RM4.90
There are 6 steps guide to take the Ramen:
1) Indulge your sight and smell receptors with the appetizing aroma of the rich broth (I did that)

2) Scoop, sip and savour generous amounts of soup to start off. The soup is the most significant element of any Ramen dish, so enjoy. (I did that as well)

3) Mix the noodles and soup well. Take note not to mix the seaweed together as it will dissolve! (I also did that then only aware I haven't snap photo....Sh*t)

There you go, the Goku Raku Ramen at RM23.90 on step 3

...managed to snap photo of Ultimate Ramen @RM21.90 before complete step 3

4) Next, slurp away! the noodles are best consumed with the soup while it is hot, approximately within 7 to 8 minutes after it is served. (I didn't take the time)

5) For that extra tasty kick, eat it with the accompaniments and added toppings (I added chilli powders, not spicy at all. then I also added black pepper, can't really feel the tasty kick from the accompaniments, I think Malaysian tasty bud is more than Japanese can understand)

6) By now, the soup will have reached its full-bodied flavour. Finish up by gulping it, down to the last drop.

Frankly, I like curry mee I eat in the morning than these ramen as lunch. The Ultimate Ramen broth taste salty while the Goku Raku Ramen broth just like normal Japanese ramen. Not really worth the price if without promotion.

Ultimate Ramen come with 1 slice of seaweed, 1 egg, 3 slices of thin meat, Ramen and some vegetables cost RM21.90 while Goku Raku Ramen come with 1 slice of seaweed, half egg, 1 slice of thin meat, Ramen and some vegetables at RM23.90......wtf!!! I don't get it, how they priced the ramen?

Anyway, go to check out yourself at Gurney Paragon

Found another good Nasi Tomato cooked by Indian at Hawker Center in Tingkat Binjal near to Bukit Tengah. We call this place "Nan Mei Yuan" in Chinese, this hawker center previously located at main street but it has been moved to more hidden inside a Taman beside a big foot ball field. Since then the business is not so good due to not so good feng shui in that location. However, you still can find many good food here. For Example: Nasi Tomato

Tasty Nasi Tomato at RM5.60 with one boiled egg, vegetables and a piece of curry chicken. Nice~~!

Raja Uda Famous Jawa Mee

People stay in Penang Island seldom explore places in mainland mostly. At least, I'm one of them. When you start to explore you'll found many good foods in Raja Uda. I heard there are over 100+ foods you can found in Jalan Raja Uda. At some point, Raja Uda seem more happening than Penang Island. When you turn into Jalan Raja Uda, immediately you'll slow down to see what Raja Uda can surprise you with different business of foods. That day, we stop by road side to try this Jawa Mee claimed to be famous
Look good isn't it? After taste it, not so like Jawa mee that I can imagine. The gravy basically tasteless. Only taste something when squeeze the lime and mixed the chilly paste. Maybe, I'm not hungry that time or something wrong with my sense. It just not Jawa mee that I expect. Anyway, many people dine here and take away the Jawa Mee
This shop is along Jalan Raja Uda, business hour is after lunch and end before dinner time. Check it out when you passby. :-)

Butterworth Leng Gaik's Dry Hokkien Mee (Prawn Mee)

Hokkien Mee, I ate a lot but do you try dry hokkien mee before? Shop selling Koay Teow soup offer dry koay teow th'ng, shop selling wantan mee (suppose to be dry) also offer wantan mee with soup. Now Hokkien mee suppose to be soup one offer dry hokkien mee.

When eat Hokkien mee, you need to taste the sweetness of prawn from the soup. In order to offer a good dry prawn mee, the sweetness of prawn have to go into the noodles then only be able to taste the sweetness of prawn. In Leng Gaik's Hokkien mee, it seem quite success to bring the sweetness of prawn in dry hokkien mee.
I tried the normal prawn mee as well. Not so bad as dry one really standing out, Prawn mee soup just normal like others. One thing no so good about Leng Gaik's prawn mee is the price, it is expensive for normal hokkien mee. Not like putting a lot of ingredient or whatsoever, 2 bowls of Hokkien mee + a side dish (Chicken Popiah) cost RM10.60.
I know RM10 is nothing nowadays but I still find the hokkien mee here is expensive compare to others. If you want to try the dry hokkien, this place just opposite the Sri Siam Curry Fish Head at Chai Leng Park. If not mistaken, they open morning until the hokkien mee sold out. That day, I went around 2.00pm, the siok bak (pork) already sold out, dry hokkien is the last bowl we ordered. To avoid disappointment, go early lah.

Massimo by the Italian Baker Sandwich with Honey

The easiest food to prepare when your 'chef' not around is the sandwiches. Get the Massimo by the Italian Baker grain bread and squeeze Euphoria Longana Honey from Eu Yan Sang, you immediately homemade yourself tasty good sandwiches.

Other brand's bread or honey also can, not necessary need to be Massimo or Eu Yan Sang. However, I can't guarantee the tastiness of the sandwiches. If you follow exactly the recipe from this post, I'm sure you will squeeze the honey for second pieces of Massimo bread. :-)

Butterworth Sri Siam Curry Fish Head

Can you name me best curry fish head in Penang? Before I try the Butterworth Sri Siam Curry Fish Head, I can only name you 1 best curry fish head in Penang which is the Curry fish head at Pan Mutiara, Batu Maung. The curry fish head is so famous until become so corporate. I mean the rate is based on corporate price. Many company like to bring their oversea guests to dine there. So, it is not very good rate for public like us.

That day, a bit late for lunch, I went to this Sri Siam curry fish head at Lebuh Kurau, Seberang Perai. You may not know where is Lebuh Kurau, the place is common to people as Chai Leng Park. Some people also called it "wai sek kai" (eater streets) in Penang. KL got one "wai sek kai" at Jalan Alor. Penang one is at Chai Leng Park.

Although it was late lunch, the coffee shop is full of people, can't find a single table even searching for empty spot to share table also not possible. I order the curry fish head but the seller said cannot commit the order because there are many orders, afraid not enough fish head available for me. So, I was given the curry fish meat only

The curry is so good that you can eat with plain rice or drink the curry soup straight. Some short like tom-yam soup but thicker. Besides curry fish, Sri Siam also offered many side dishes like economy rice but the choices is more toward spicy flavour
In Malaysia, not only Malay or Indian cook spicy food, Chinese cook spicy food too.
See, like Nasi Kandar or Nasi Lemak, not? You'll surprise, 2 plates of rice got Chicken, egg, anchovies, vegetables and 1 bowl of Curry fish meat cost RM15 only. Cheaper than the Fried Ikan Bawal at Warung Kelapa Sawit, Juru.
Sri Siam Curry fish head can be found at Chai Leng Park. Slow down and look at your left side for this stall at Lebuh Kurau 3 (if not mistaken). Operating at Lunch hour only.

Sungai Nibong Dhoby Ghaut Koay Teow Th'ng

When I posted Koay Teow Th'ng at Bukit Tengah, some reader comment that Seven Village Koay Teow Th'ng so so only. Suggest me try the Koay Teow Th'ng at "Seven Street" market or the Dhoby Ghaut Duck Meat Koay Teow Th'ng at Sungai Nibong. I know this place, but most of the time, I just order the curry mee because the Koay Teow Th'ng not so attractive
Dry Koay Teow Th'ng at RM4.00. Freaking small portion at this cost.
Wet Koay Teow Th'ng at RM4.00 as well. Big mouth eater can finish the whole bowl less than 10 scoop. Freaking expensive! A small bowl cost so much. If it is tasty, then at least it worth. But, it is not. Nothing special about this Koay Teow Th'ng, it is overrated. If I were you, I won't order the Koay Teow Th'ng at this shop.

If you haven't, you should go and try it out. The noodle is not Bakmi, Ramen, Yakisoba, udon. It is Kesme, one type noodle that is flat. The soup itself is good, not like the tomyam noodle in the market that cook using powder. The soup really the Secret Recipe of itself.
One bowl cost around RM15, don't miss it. Tom YAM YAM yam yum yum yum~!!!
