You can't find any tomyam mee like this in Penang. The tomyam mee in Penang easily cost you RM4 with 2 prawn, crabstick and a few leaf of 'poh ho' (mint), and that it. First time, I eat tomyam mee with abalone (kuantao type), crabstick, minced meat, fish-ball, prawns and mint. All of this at RM5 only.
Living standard in Penang is getting high until they reduce the ingredients to maintain the price. Sometime, the portion is small till you need to order second food. By the time, you full, you probably spend more for a meal.
Compare to food price in the world, the food price in Malaysia still consider low. Take for example, an economic rice in Solomon Islands cost me RM20, Chicken Chop at RM60. First things, I came back from Solomon Island is eat all the Penang hawker foods I can in one meal also hardly cost me RM20.
The tomyam mee above can be found at Parit Buntar town. Although the price is slightly higher there but it really worth for money with all the ingredients. This tomyam mee stall located at same kopitiam with Char Koay Teow and 888 Rojak
When I saw the Putu Buluh at Kuala Kurau night market, I quickly order 1 set to try. What is Putu Buluh? I know in Penang have Putu Mayong. Putu Buluh (Bamboo) is another putu mayong put into Bamboo cone and make into shape of stick. Look for yourself
Although it named as Putu Buluh Taiping, I brought it at Kuala Kurau Night market every Saturday from 4.30pm to 7pm only. Don't be surprise of the night market start in the afternoon and end early. Local borne Ah Ben told us, the night market at Kuala Kurau is in operation at this hour only.
5 pieces at RM2.00. Putu buluh in the shape of stick is easier to eat compare to putu mayong. At least, you can take the whole thing and Oomph.
The Putu mayong and brown sugar put into bamboo cone by young boy.
Besides this Putu Buluh, you can find many dried seafood at Pasar Malam. I brought 1 pack of ikan bilis (Anchovies) at RM5. My mum comment the anchovies fresh and sui (cantik), taste better in deep fried.
Parit Buntar exporting "Beh Tai Soh" (Biscuit) to many state in Malaysia including Penang. You can buy this famous Guan Hiang Biscuit at many morning market in Penang. However, if you happen to travel to Parit Buntar, you can buy this biscuit fresh at No 378, Jalan Kedah 34200 Parit Buntar, Perak. It is not easy to find, Google map also don't record the road name. If you search Jalan Kedah, you'll go to Holland. Refer to my waypoint here
The good "Beh Tai Soh" is the biscuit still crunchy on the skin and soft from the inside. While the not-so-good biscuit is the other way round, skin soft and the inside is hard. I buy the "beh Tai Soh" direct from the bakery which is freshly make and hot from oven.
If you successfully find the place, you need to walk to the backyard to take order. No receptionist at the front door, only the signboard of Guan Hiang Biscuit. The house number is 378. If you come in the evening, House 378 will be close. However, you still can place order at House 606 same Kampung (Village). Ask around the neighborhood, they are happy to point you direction
That day, when we buy Biscuit at Parit Buntar, there is a customer driving a brand-new Nissan Fairlady Z also came here for the "Beh Tai Soh". It is so odd to see somebody drive so good car to buy biscuit at Kampung (Village). Can you imagine, how good the biscuit is?
One pack is only RM3.20. (The dealer in Penang sell at RM3.80) People who came here don't go back with just 1 pack. Got white sugar and brown sugar, you should try both.
There is many imitate brand and make-no-mistake, the brand is "仙女牌" (Fairy Brand).
This rojak awarded with Best Tasty Rojak in the World. I'm no kidding. This is best of the best rojak ever taste. My ex-boss recommend this rojak when I work in Nibong Tebal 10 years ago. Back in that time, I always 'tapao' rojak back to Penang every time I return home.
This rojak shop named "eight eight eight" found at Bee Chuan Kopitiam at Parit Buntar town. It near to Billion and Minat hypermarket. Easy to find with this map.
What make this 888 rojak special? Every rojak also taste good, every rojak also got fruits as ingredients, every rojak almost the same. Why, what how? Check out rojak making:
The special of this 888 rojak not only the rojak kuah (sauce) unique, the best part is the cucur. I can't explain how good is the cucur with the rojak kuah. You just have to try it yourself.
Kuala Gula is a popular place for bird-watching. At first, I thought it is place produce sugar because in Malay, gula is sugar. In fact, this area is oil palm plantation managed by Sime Darby. I came here neither for bird-watching nor oil palm factory visit. I came here for food. Recommended by Ben to try the Crab Char Bee Hoon (Fried Mee Hoon) at 'Soon Soon Lai' restaurant.
It is fucking good. Sorry, I have to use the vulgar word to express it. My English diction is so limit. You can't find seafood that is so fresh except here. Immediately, you taste the 鲜甜美味of the seafood. Besides this cimb char bee hoon, there are other fresh seafood offer.
I know you won't come so far for this cimb Char Bee Hoon, you can visit to 'Hua Seng Keng' which is one of the tourist spot in Kerian district in the state of Perak Darul Ridzuan. This tourist spot can be find at Gula Estate inside oil palm field. Not easy access from main road, not even found in Goole Map
When you see this logo, don't mistaken it as school logo. It is the logo of the 'Hua Seng Keng' temple. You can also visit to Kuala Gula Bird Sanctuary and Kuala Kurau before dine in the 'Soon Soon Lai' restaurant. Although this place is so 'ulu' (rural), you'll surprise 2 tourist bus parking outside the restaurant. Am not kidding.
The shop open from 12pm to 11.30pm. I would suggest you dine in around 4.30pm and leave latest by 6pm because there is no light on the road at night. Too dangerous to drive when the day is dark.
On one weekend, we planned to explore the famous "pang-long" laksa at Parit Buntar. Special about this "pang-long" laksa is open for weekend and business for 1 - 2 hours only. The laksa selling fast like movie ticket at Golden Screen Cinema. Like Chinese proverb said, the bird wake up early got worm to eat. (lazy people counter it with: the worm wake up early get eaten by bird) Because, we are not wake up early like bird, the laksa sold up when we reach there.
We forced to explore some other food in Parit Buntar town because we haven't eat breakfast yet. We found this Char Koay Teow at one of the Bee Chuan Kopitiam opposite Billions and Minat hypermarket. Check out the map
Frankly speaking, Penang famous with Char Koay Teow food, Penangites normally don't recognise Char Koay Teow at other places even the Char Koay Teow is good. Same mind-set applied to us as well. However, when the Char Koay Teow presented on the table, in this so beautiful ceramic plate. Mentally, I know this Char Koay Teow going to be good.
You got feeling of eating when it presented in this beautiful classical plate. In Penang, the Char Koay Teow normally deliver in blue plastic plate where you can see the shinning oily look at the edge of plate. Although it taste good, mentally you feel like you going to get sick eating so oily food.
I hope the Char Koay Teow seller in Penang can deliver more healthy (while still taste good) and good presentation of Char Koay Teow because food not only talk about tasteful but also the settings. ...(",)
