Raja Uda You Char Kueh (Youtiao)
Anyone can translate Youtiao to English? Literally, it is "oil strip". Hokkien called it you char kway. Cantonese pronounce it as yau ja gwai, direct translate is oil-fried-ghost. You must scratching your head what kind of oil is that can cook ghost. According to wiki, it is also known as Chinese oil stick, Chinese donut, Chinese Cruller or fried bread stick. In Youtiao family, there are "hua chee", "ham chin peng" and others. Basically, it is deep fried of dough in Chinese cuisine.
Nah, it look like this...! it is oily that you have to hold it with 2 fingers only (",) Those who sensitive with oily food should avoid it. For those who like oily stuff, you can get the best of you char koay at Jalan Raja Uda. The business run by seven sisters and you can found at least 2 stalls selling at Jalan Raja Uda on 2 different hours, One in the evening, one at night.
Penang got lenglui Tong sui at Jelutong(Pretty's dessert), in Raja Uda, consider they are lenglui you char kueh....lol.
Golden-brown, deep fried dough in Chinese Cuisine, the You Char Kueh. Conventionally, you char kueh are lightly salted and made so they can be torn lengthwise in two. You char kueh are normally eaten as an accompaniment for rice congee or soy milk. Some people also eaten with Kopi. I, myself like the "hua chee" because it sweet. :-)

Sungai Nibong Dhoby Ghaut Curry Mee
Another Good Curry Mee found in Penang. It can be found at Sungai Nibong Kecil, Opposite Balai Polis (Police Station) Sungai Nibong. Operating hour from 6pm until midnight. Small Bowl at RM3.00, Medium at RM4.00 and Big Bowl at RM5.00. Additional dishes charge separately. Dishes available are Chicken Wing, Sotong, Big Prawn, Quail Egg, Seasoned Fish Roll. Once you add everything it will be like what I have in Nibong Tebal curry mee.
At some point, they also called it white curry mee because the soup is white colour. After you stir the chilly paste into the soup, then only it become curry mee. I like to eat curry mee with "Chai Tao", the taste is so match and good.
Check him out at Sungai Nibong Dhoby Ghaut Curry Mee. The way him manage his business is more organized than the stall behind. So, if you are starving, he'll deliver the food fast although he busy cooking the curry mee.

Auntie Ann's Pretzel Perfect with Sour Cream & Onion
This Auntie Ann's Pretzel just baked. Fresh from the oven! Spread with sour cream and onion powder, it is so perfect to eat. From wiki, A Pretzel (known as Brezel in German) is a type of baked food made from dough in soft and hard varieties and savory or sweet flavors in a unique knot-like shapre, originating in Europe.
For some reason, many Chinese find this type of food not worth to eat. First, it is not cheap. Second, cannot get full. Why wanna waste the money for something that cannot get you full? It is better spend the same amount of money to order other food like Chicken rice or mee goreng. You know, high in carb, then only you got energy.
With this type of mentality, frankly speaking I never try Auntie Ann's Pretzel before. Till, someone recommend this to me. First bite, I already melt and fall in love with the Auntie Ann's Pretzel especially with Sour Cream and Onion powder.
If you have mentality like me, don't be shame. Just go and try this out today. :-)

Parit Buntar Tom Yam Mee
You can't find any tomyam mee like this in Penang. The tomyam mee in Penang easily cost you RM4 with 2 prawn, crabstick and a few leaf of 'poh ho' (mint), and that it. First time, I eat tomyam mee with abalone (kuantao type), crabstick, minced meat, fish-ball, prawns and mint. All of this at RM5 only.
Living standard in Penang is getting high until they reduce the ingredients to maintain the price. Sometime, the portion is small till you need to order second food. By the time, you full, you probably spend more for a meal.
Compare to food price in the world, the food price in Malaysia still consider low. Take for example, an economic rice in Solomon Islands cost me RM20, Chicken Chop at RM60. First things, I came back from Solomon Island is eat all the Penang hawker foods I can in one meal also hardly cost me RM20.
The tomyam mee above can be found at Parit Buntar town. Although the price is slightly higher there but it really worth for money with all the ingredients. This tomyam mee stall located at same kopitiam with Char Koay Teow and 888 Rojak

Teluk Tempoyak Ikan Bakar & Nasi Lemak
Coming up next is the Famous Adnan Bin Hassan Ikan Bakar at Kampung Telok Tempoyak near Batu Maung. There are 2 ikan bakar stall at Kampung Telok Tempoyak, the original one is found at the housing area of Telok Tempoyak. It is near to the extension bridge at sea. This Adnan Bin Hassan ikan bakar and nasi lemak famous for a few decade since I'm small.
During those day, there is no easy road access to Batu Maung but people from town also travel to Batu Maung for this Ikan Bakar at Kampong Telok Tempoyak. Kampung Telok Tempoyak is a fisherman village, so you can have the fresh and best seafood here.
Ikan Bawal Talang at RM25. The spicy sour sauce is amazing, it go well with the Ikan Bakar although ikan bakar already bakar with it own gravy. Besides the fresh ikan bakar at Kampong Teluk Tempoyak. You must eat the Nasi Lemak
The Nasi lemak is sooooo good. No joke, the smell is sooo nice. I can eat it plain with sambal ikan bilis. Basically, you can't find any good nasi lemak even in the Malaysian invented Nasi Lemak. The Nasi Lemak cost RM1.50 with the Sambal Ikan Bilis. RM1.00 for the plain nasi lemak only.
Order also the big mug drink at this warung because the Ikan Bakar's sauce can be very spicy. This big mug Laici cost RM6.00. Small cup at RM2.00 and Jug at RM7.00. Actually, this place good for gathering, got nice view, sea breeze, cheap drink but no wifi access lah.
Type of fishes available for bakar: Siakap Putih, Jenahak, Kerapu, Merah, Bawal Talang, Udang and Ketam Nipah
Price List:
Siakap Putik (1KG) - RM35
Jenahak (1KG) - RM35
Kerapu (1KG) - RM50
Merah (Kecil seekor) - RM17
Merah Besar (1KG) - RM35
Bawal Talang (1 ekor) - RM25
Udang Biasa (1KG) - RM60
Udang Pilih (1KG) - RM70
Ketam Nipah N (1KG) - RM45
Ketam Nipah J (1KG) - RM35
It is expensive? I not sure but better than some seafood stall put up as market price. This is very tricky as we have no idea what is market price. They can 'slaughter' you with any price they want to sell you. I would prefer the price put up in the signboard even it is expensive.
Come early to explore Kampung Telok Tempoyak fisherman village. It is a good place for photography on the extension bridge.
Or even catch your own fish for Ikan Bakar later

Kuala Kurau Putu Buluh at Pasar Malam
When I saw the Putu Buluh at Kuala Kurau night market, I quickly order 1 set to try. What is Putu Buluh? I know in Penang have Putu Mayong. Putu Buluh (Bamboo) is another putu mayong put into Bamboo cone and make into shape of stick. Look for yourself
Although it named as Putu Buluh Taiping, I brought it at Kuala Kurau Night market every Saturday from 4.30pm to 7pm only. Don't be surprise of the night market start in the afternoon and end early. Local borne Ah Ben told us, the night market at Kuala Kurau is in operation at this hour only.
5 pieces at RM2.00. Putu buluh in the shape of stick is easier to eat compare to putu mayong. At least, you can take the whole thing and Oomph.
The Putu mayong and brown sugar put into bamboo cone by young boy.
Besides this Putu Buluh, you can find many dried seafood at Pasar Malam. I brought 1 pack of ikan bilis (Anchovies) at RM5. My mum comment the anchovies fresh and sui (cantik), taste better in deep fried.

Padang Brown Famous Popiah Basah
Last week, I took half day leave and sent car for maintenance. The air-conditional of Perodua service center is so chill make me hungry even I just had lunch. I was looking for duck drumstick mee suah (noodles) at Jalan Sungai Pinang but it was closed. I tour around that area look for Anson Road Char Koay Teow also not open. I end up having Popiah Basah (wet) at Johor Road
one popiah basah at RM1. Not sure, how popularity of this popiah basah. There is 1 uncle share table with me came for the popiah basah only. I order mee goreng as 1 popiah basah is not enough for me
So so only but edible at RM3. Consider quite expensive for mee goreng that got nothing much inside. Surprisingly, Padang Brown hawker centre have multi-racial seller. There are Malay selling Popiah Basah, prawn fritters, Indian selling mee goreng and Chinese selling Yam Rice, Hokkien Mee and others.
Feeling hungry at odd hour, at Padang Brown, you will find variety of foods to eat and experience the real 1Malaysia hawker centre.

Humble Beginnings Mille Crepe Birthday Cake
There are many Sagis in my company, my department itself already have 2 Sagittarius. However, 1 already left. That day, we are celebrating Cutie Pie, Hooi Bing and ADelaporte's Birthday with the Humble Beginnings Mille Crepe. The organiser order 2 Mille Crepe, Strawberry Heaven and Mango Cheese.
The description on the flyer said: Twenty layers of crepes with a delightful combination of fresh cream and vanilla custard between each layer. The topmost layer is caramelized to give it a nice smoky sugary flavor. Everything is hand-made and hand-layered; a true labour of love.
We used to order the same cake for Petrus's birthday 2 years back.
That time, I reluctant to read the flyer and count the French Vanilla layer one by one.
It is so good. By looking at the cake, you wish them quickly sing the song
Cut the cake and distribute a piece to you.....hehe.

Kuala Kurau Famous Prawn Fritters and Pineapple Drink
I heard Kuala Kurau is a beautiful fisherman village. Many photographer pick this place to challenge their photography skill. I also want to see the scenery and of course, explore some famous food here. Before I go, I do some survey online and found a site introducing the famous Prawn Fritters in Kuala Kurau.
I got the shop address but no map. To be safe, we invite Ah Ben who is local join us for 1-day tour at Kuala Kurau. He was inviting us to visit his hometown and mentioning this famous Prawn Fritters way before I do online survey.
How good is this famous prawn fritters? How it fried? Who is the owner? How long in business? Operation hour and others can read at www.mywisewife.com I just want to add a pineapple drink on top of the Famous Prawn Fritters
It is not a juice but Pineapple Drink. It is so special and good to hydrating your body. So fresh and energized. Noticed many people order this drink here at Kuala Kurau. You should drink pineapple drink, do as the Romans when you travel to this part of the world.
There is a noodles soup selling here. The owner running business on her tricycle. Look like good but I do not have chance to try it. If you have chance to visit to Kuala Kurau, check that out too.
Here are some of the photo I took when visited to Kuala Kurau. I use only Canon Ixus 860IS, cannot compare to the quality of DSLR lah. This place is good to see sunset. If you plan your trip properly, you can eat Pang-long's Laksa, buy Fairy's biscuit, eat World Tasty Rojak, Char Koay Teow, Tom Yam Mee, 'CIMB' Char Bee Hoon, visited the Gula Estate, see sunset and eat Famous Tu bak Hoon before you return home.
Not so bad after edit, look like postcard....hehe

Nibong Tebal Tu Bak Hoon (Pork Noodles)
Another famous food in Nibong Tebal - Tu Bak Hoon. People from Penang Island tense to travel so far to Nibong Tebal just for this food. With lots of pork and meatball, the soup of this noodles so tasteful. I don't eat pork's intestine, so may not taste the best out of this Tu Bak Hoon.
For those pork's intestine lover, you can try out this Tu Bak Hoon at Kedai Makanan Lye Lee Food & Beverage restaurant. I agak-agak (estimate) plot the location in this map. Please look out for the signboard when you are near
One bowl cost RM5.00 with many ingredients. In Penang Island, you can only get a few piece of this and that. In Nibong Tebal, the Tu bak hoon look like new bowl although you already dip the pork a few time in the sauce.
Please note that, this is nonhalal food.

Sungai NYior Lie's Nasi Tomato (Tomato Rice)
I love Nasi Tomato as soon as I stop drinking milk. OK, I exaggerated. I do like Nasi Tomato since young age. When I small, there is a Malay stall in my kampung selling good curry fish head with tomato rice. It will be like festival when somebody kena 4D (strike lottery) and belanja (treat) us eat.
Since then, Nasi tomato become one of my favorited food. I can't find so good Nasi Tomato until Kee Kee recommend one near Butterworth. I found young time memory by eating Nasi Tomato at this Malay food stall.
The Nasi tomato is so original. You can find the spices that suppose to cook Nasi tomato in there. It smell so good with just the plain Nasi tomato. The Nasi tomato at Butterworth is perfect. It can be find in front of Sunrise Megacity Sdn Bhd or opposite 100plus factory at Seberang Perai. (previously known as Coca-Cola factory) It is found somewhere here
The business is so good. They only open on weekday during lunch time. For people who work in Penang Island, it is not easy to try the Nasi Tomato because it not open on weekend. It is worth to apply half day leave to dine in here when you crave for Nasi Tomato. :-)
