Raja Uda You Char Kueh (Youtiao)
Anyone can translate Youtiao to English? Literally, it is "oil strip". Hokkien called it you char kway. Cantonese pronounce it as yau ja gwai, direct translate is oil-fried-ghost. You must scratching your head what kind of oil is that can cook ghost. According to wiki, it is also known as Chinese oil stick, Chinese donut, Chinese Cruller or fried bread stick. In Youtiao family, there are "hua chee", "ham chin peng" and others. Basically, it is deep fried of dough in Chinese cuisine.
Nah, it look like this...! it is oily that you have to hold it with 2 fingers only (",) Those who sensitive with oily food should avoid it. For those who like oily stuff, you can get the best of you char koay at Jalan Raja Uda. The business run by seven sisters and you can found at least 2 stalls selling at Jalan Raja Uda on 2 different hours, One in the evening, one at night.
Penang got lenglui Tong sui at Jelutong(Pretty's dessert), in Raja Uda, consider they are lenglui you char kueh....lol.
Golden-brown, deep fried dough in Chinese Cuisine, the You Char Kueh. Conventionally, you char kueh are lightly salted and made so they can be torn lengthwise in two. You char kueh are normally eaten as an accompaniment for rice congee or soy milk. Some people also eaten with Kopi. I, myself like the "hua chee" because it sweet. :-)
